Three Congressmen announced they won’t run for re-election in 2014: Tom Latham (R-IA), Frank Wolf (R-VA), and Jim Matheson (D-UT). Matheson is the only Democrat in Utah’s Congressional delegation; he beat Mia Love by less than 800 votes in 2012 and she’s running again, so his prospects for re-election weren’t good.
Yesterday the Senate confirmed Jeh Johnson as head of the Department of Homeland Security on a 78-16 vote. Today the Senate voted 67-33 for cloture on Paul Ryan’s budget bill. Senator Jeff Sessions says the Ryan bill double counts Medicare money — it reduces Medicare spending in the out years, calls that a savings, then spends the savings today.
